United Initiators NOROX®771 Methyl ethyl ketone peroxide 1338-23-4

Product Description: NOROX® 771 is a mixture of methyl ethyl ketone peroxide and tert-butyl hydroperoxide containing a coagulant. It is a liquid polymerization initiator for room temperature curing of special unsaturated polyester and vinyl ester resins. It has the following advantages and properties:

  • Lower peak maximum exotherm
  • Excellent 24-hour cure time
  • Longer gel time
  • Reduces foaming in vinyl ester resins
  • Low shrinkage

Technical data:

  • Active oxygen content: not more than 9.0%
  • Form: Liquid
  • Color: colorless and transparent
  • Specific gravity at 25°C: 1.2
  • Flash point (SETA C.C.): 150°F/66°C minimum
  • Solubility: Oxygenated organic solvents
  • Microsolubility: water

Applications: NOROX® 771 is an excellent liquid polymerization initiator for room temperature curing of unsaturated polyester and vinyl ester resins where a lower peak maximum exotherm is required. Compared to standard NOROX® MEKP products (e.g. MEKP-9, -925, etc.), the gel time is slower, but the final hardness of the cured resin is usually better than that of resins initiated with standard MEKP.

In most applications, it is recommended that parts made with NOROX® 771 remain in the mold for 24 hours, or at least overnight, to ensure dimensional stability after demolding.

Storage:

  • Storage at 80°F or lower is recommended. Maximum shelf life recommended at 70°F or less.
  • Store in original containers away from flammable materials and all sources of heat, sparks or flame, and away from catalysts such as cyclic cobalt acid sound, accelerators, accelerants, oxidizing or reducing agents, strong acids or bases.
  • Leaking containers should be removed immediately and isolated in a safe area. Repackage or dispose of immediately (see Spill Handling).
  • Do not store in refrigerators containing food and/or beverages.

Processing:

  • Know the safe handling procedures for all personnel and clarify them to them.
  • Take out only the storage materials that require a first shift workload.
  • Wear safety glasses or goggles and chemically abrasive gloves.
  • Keep away from heat sources, flames and sparks.
  • Avoid inhaling vapors.
  • Dilution is not recommended.
  • Do not add peroxide directly to the accelerator to avoid violent decomposition.

First Aid:

  • EYES: Rinse immediately with plenty of water and keep rinsing for at least 15 minutes. Medical attention is required.
  • Skin: wash with soap and water.
  • SWALLOWING: Drink large amounts of milk or water and seek immediate medical attention. Do not induce vomiting. A call to a local poison control center may be recommended to assist the physician.

Spill handling:

  • Clean up immediately and absorb with an inert material (vermiculite or sand).
  • Immediately after absorption, moisten moderately with water and place in a clean plastic bag and then in a plastic bucket.
  • Dispose of immediately in accordance with local, state and federal regulations.

Firefighting:

  • Peroxides burn easily and rapidly.
  • It is best to extinguish fires with water from a safe distance, preferably using a water mist sprayer.
  • For very small fires, carbon dioxide, foam or dry powder extinguishers may be effective.

Packaging, transportation and delivery:

  • NOROX® 771 is available in standard package sizes of 4 x 8 lb and 44 lb (20 kg) polyethylene bottles.
  • NOROX® 771 is also available pre-stained in 44 lb (20 kg) bottles.
  • Classification - Refer to Sections 14 and 15 of the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for the specific NOROX® 771 for transportation and regulatory information.
