For some special applications it is desirable to use dried benzoyl peroxide powder as a catalyst. For these cases the benzoyl peroxide formulation Perkadox® 33 was introduced, which is a mixture of benzoyl peroxide and fillers. Perkadox® 33 can be handled very easily and without risk. It contains no plasticizers and is less concentrated than usual benzoyl peroxide formulations, making administration easier. One of the most important applications of Perkadox® 33 is as a catalyst for putty based on unsaturated polyester resins. Putty containing accelerated polyester resins and Perkadox® 33 cures quickly so that surfaces can be sanded and polished in a short time. The putty consists of two parts, namely: a) A powder consisting of a mixture of fillers with pigments and Perkadox® 33 as catalyst. b) a liquid component consisting of polyester resin and N,N-dimethylaniline (10% aliphatic ester formulation) or N,N-dimethyl-p-toluidine (10% aliphatic ester formulation), or, alternatively, a gas pedal of polyester resin containing amines. When putty must be used, mix components a) and b). Manufacturers of these putties should take care that the powder contains Perkadox® 33 and the liquid component of the accelerator at a level that allows sufficient time for the application of the putty after mixing the two components.
