Properties and Applications:
- Thermosetting Composites: Perkadox® 16 is a solid peroxydicarbonate primarily used to cure unsaturated polyester resins and methacrylate resins at temperatures of 60°C and above. Perkadox® 16 is not suitable for producing transparent castings or coatings, as it causes cloudiness in the final product. For transparent products, Perkadox® 16S is recommended. Perkadox® 16 exhibits high reactivity under elevated temperatures due to its low activation temperature, while also providing a long pot life at room temperature.Perkadox® 16 is typically used in combination with low-activity peroxides such as Trigonox C, Trigonox 29-B50, Trigonox 21S, or Perkadox® GB-50X to ensure proper curing. It is suitable for applications requiring a long gel time or processing time at room temperature, yet rapid curing at temperatures between 60 and 140°C. Examples include pultrusion, fiber winding, and artificial marble production.
- Polymer Production: Vinyl Chloride Polymerization: Within the temperature range of 40–65°C, Perkadox® 16 can be used for suspension and bulk polymerization of vinyl chloride. Perkadox® 16 can be used alone or in combination with other peroxides, such as 1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl neodecanoate (Trigonox 423),isopropylbenzyl peroxydecanoate (Trigonox 99), or di-lauroyl peroxide (Laurox) to improve reactor efficiency.
- Acrylic Resin Production: Perkadox® 16 is an initiator for the (co)polymerization of methacrylates and acrylates.
Half-life and thermal stability:
- At different temperatures, the half-lives of Perkadox 16 in chlorobenzene are 0.1 hours (82°C), 1 hour (64°C), and 10 hours (48°C), respectively.
- It is thermally unstable, with a self-accelerating decomposition temperature (SADT) of 40°C.
- The maximum storage temperature is 20°C.
Packaging and Shipping:
- Standard packaging is 20 kg cardboard boxes, compliant with international regulations.
- Perkadox 16 is classified as a Class C organic peroxide, solid, requiring temperature control, Division 5.2; UN 3114.
Safety and Handling:
- Keep containers tightly closed during storage and handling. Store in a dry, well-ventilated area, away from heat sources or ignition sources, and avoid direct sunlight.
- Do not weigh or repackage in the storage room; avoid contact with reducing agents, acids, bases, and heavy metal compounds.
- For detailed safety information, refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).
Major decomposition products:
- Carbon dioxide and 4-tert-butylcyclohexanol.
