United Initiators BENOX®A-75 Dibenzoyl peroxide 94-36-0

Structure and properties:

  • BENOX® A-75 is a water-wet granular benzoyl peroxide with a moisture content of 75%.
  • Morphologically, this product is not as flammable and impact-prone as granular substances that contain little or no water.
  • This BENOX® benzoyl peroxide can be used without adverse effects as an initiator for the polymerization of organic substances such as vinyl monomers and unsaturated polyester resins.

Technical data:

  • Benzoyl peroxide content: 73.5% - 76.5%
  • Water content: 23% - 26%
  • Contains water molecules (as dry benzoyl peroxide) down to 99%
  • Active Oxygen Content (wet basis): 4.86% - 5.05%
  • Form: Fine, flowable granules
  • Color: white
  • Iron content (dry basis max.): 10 ppm
  • Total chloride content (as NaCl, dry basis max.): 1500 ppm
  • Organochlorine content (as BzCl, dry basis max): 1100 ppm
  • HCl content (dry basis): 0.04%
  • Benzoic acid content (dry basis): 0.30%
  • Critical temperature (SADT): 70°C
  • Soluble in organic solvents (water compatibility depends on solvent concentration), but insoluble in water
  • Recommended storage temperature: 30°C (86°F) maximum and 5°C (41°F) minimum
  • Stability from date of delivery: 6 months

Half-life data:

  • Thermal decomposition data (half-life in benzene) are generated based on the use of a specific benzoyl peroxide dissolved in a solvent (usually benzene) at 0.2 moles/liter. The half-life of this highly diluted benzoyl peroxide is the time required to decompose half of the benzoyl peroxide. The rate of decomposition is directly related to the rate of free radical generation, and these half-life data can provide guidance in selecting the optimal peroxide for a given application. These half-life data are specific to the solvent used and apply to thermal rather than activated decomposition.

Applications:

  • BENOX® A-75 can be used as an initiator for free radical polymerization and as a cross-linking agent in a variety of applications.
  • This water-wet benzoyl peroxide dissolves more quickly than the dry form of the product.
  • BENOX® A-75 is an effective initiator in the polymerization and copolymerization of a wide range of vinyl-based monomers, including styrene, methyl methacrylate, acrylate, acrylonitrile, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride and ethylene.
  • Typical use concentrations range from 0.11 TP3T to 2.01 TP3T and are suitable for polymerization reactions in block, solution, emulsion, and suspension systems at temperatures from 82°C to 149°C.
  • Benzoyl peroxide is also used to produce phenylated and methylated oleic acid resins and other epoxy resin ester chemistries.
  • Other uses include drying agents for printing inks, bleaching agents, organic chemical synthesis and vulcanization of natural and synthetic rubber.
  • One of the more common uses of benzoyl peroxide is the free radical initiated polymerization and crosslinking of vinyl monomer-unsaturated polyester resin systems. Typically, granular benzoyl peroxide is dispersed in the vinyl monomer prior to incorporation into the monomer.
  • Benzoyl peroxide can be used as a high temperature cure initiator or as a room temperature cure initiator with the addition of an amine accelerator (e.g., dimethylaniline) to the resin system. The concentration of the peroxide initiator used is from 11 TP3T to 31 TP3T by weight of the resin.
  • BENOX® A-75 is an excellent room-temperature initiator for unsaturated polyester resins when used in "two-component" spray systems.
In this system, the catalyst is mixed with the resin in one container, while the benzoyl peroxide initiator is added to a second container. The contents of these two containers are mixed together through the mixing chamber of the spray gun prior to spraying.

Storage:

  • Users of BENOX® A-75 should be aware that water in the product will migrate to the bottom of the package after packaging.
  • As a result, the analyzed concentration of benzoyl peroxide will vary from the top to the bottom of the package.
  • Therefore, if you do not intend to use the complete package of BENOX® A-75, mix the material thoroughly before removing the required amount of product.

Packaging:

The standard packaging specification for BENOX® A-75 is 3 x 5 kg (dry weight, 25 lbs.) polyethylene bags in cardboard boxes, weight net.
