United Initiators BENOX®A-75 Diphenylperoxide 94-36-0

2023-10-11benoxa-75

Structure and Properties:

  • BENOX® A-75 is a water-moistened granular form of benzoyl peroxide with a moisture content of 75%.
  • In terms of physical properties, this product is not as flammable or as susceptible to impact as granular substances with low or no moisture content.
  • This BENOX® benzoyl peroxide can be used as a polymerization initiator for organic compounds, such as ethylene monomers and unsaturated polyester resins, without adverse effects.

Technical Data:

  • Benzoyl peroxide content: 73.5% – 76.5%
  • Moisture content: 23% – 26%
  • Water content (based on dry benzoyl peroxide) is at least 99%
  • Active oxygen content (wet basis): 4.86% – 5.05%
  • Form: Fine, free-flowing granules
  • Color: White
  • Iron content (maximum on a dry basis): 10 ppm
  • Total chloride content (expressed as NaCl, maximum on a dry basis): 1,500 ppm
  • Organic chlorine content (as BzCl, max on a dry basis): 1,100 ppm
  • Hydrochloric acid content (dry basis): 0.04%
  • Benzoic acid content (dry basis): 0.30%
  • Critical Temperature (SADT): 70°C
  • Soluble in organic solvents (water compatibility depends on solvent concentration), but insoluble in water
  • Recommended storage temperature: maximum 30°C (86°F) and minimum 5°C (41°F)
  • Stability from date of delivery: 6 months

Half-life data:

  • Thermal decomposition data (half-life in benzene) are generated using a specific concentration of 0.2 mol/L benzoyl peroxide dissolved in a solvent (typically benzene). The half-life of this highly diluted benzoyl peroxide is the time required for half of the benzoyl peroxide to decompose.Since the decomposition rate is directly related to the rate of free radical formation, these half-life data can serve as a guide for selecting the optimal peroxide for a given application. These half-life data are specific to the solvent used and apply to thermal decomposition rather than activated decomposition.

Applications:

  • BENOX® A-75 can be used as a free-radical polymerization initiator and a crosslinking agent in a variety of applications.
  • This water-moistened benzoyl peroxide dissolves more rapidly than the dry form of the product.
  • BENOX® A-75 is an effective initiator in the polymerization and copolymerization of various ethylene-based monomers, including styrene, methyl methacrylate, acrylates, acrylonitrile, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, and ethylene.
  • Typical usage concentrations range from 0.1% to 2.0%, and it is suitable for block, solution, emulsion, and suspension polymerization reactions conducted at temperatures ranging from 82°C to 149°C.
  • Benzoyl peroxide is also used in chemical reactions to produce phenylated and methylated oleic acid resins and other epoxy resin esters.
  • Other uses include as a drying agent in printing inks, as a bleaching agent, in organic chemical synthesis, and in the vulcanization of natural and synthetic rubbers.
  • One of the more common uses of benzoyl peroxide is for the radical-initiated polymerization and cross-linking of ethylene monomer-unsaturated polyester resin systems. Typically, granular benzoyl peroxide is dispersed in the ethylene monomer before being added to the monomer.
  • Benzoyl peroxide can be used as a high-temperature curing initiator or as a room-temperature curing initiator when an amine accelerator (such as dimethylaniline) is added to the resin system. The concentration of the peroxide initiator ranges from 1% to 3% by weight of the resin.
  • BENOX® A-75 is an excellent room-temperature initiator for unsaturated polyester resins when used in a “two-component” spray system.
In this system, the catalyst is mixed with the resin in one container, while the benzoyl peroxide initiator is added to a second container.Prior to spraying, the contents of these two containers are mixed together in the spray gun’s mixing chamber.

Storage:

  • Users of BENOX® A-75 should note that, after packaging, water in the product migrates to the bottom of the container.
  • As a result, the analytical concentration of benzoyl peroxide will vary from the top to the bottom of the container.
  • Therefore, if you do not intend to use the entire package of BENOX® A-75, you should mix the material thoroughly before removing the required amount.

Packaging:

The standard packaging specification for BENOX® A-75 is 3 x 5 kg (dry weight, 25 lbs) polyethylene bags packed in a cardboard box; the weight indicated is net weight.
