Perkadox AIBN-PD
2,2'-Azobis(isobutyronitrile)
CAS Number: 78-67-1
Physical Form: Solid
We offer azo initiators, such as Perkadox® AIBN (azodibutyronitrile) and Perkadox® AMBN (2-methylbutyronitrile), for use with various monomers (e.g., styrene, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, acrylonitrile, acrylates, and methacrylates. Our most commonly used initiator is AIBN, but our AMBN offers better solubility than AIBN. Advantages of AIBN Initiators: Azo initiators offer many advantages over standard organic peroxides; for example, they do not form oxidative byproducts and result in low yellowing. Azo initiators generate only C-centered radicals, which are low in energy, highly selective, and have low branching. This results in low polydispersity index (PDI) values and molecular weights. AIBN and other azo initiators provide excellent color stability in transparent, colored polymers such as PMMA. They do not form oxidative residues nor cause oxidative degradation of coloring or dyeing systems. Compared to organic peroxides, azo initiators prevent excessive grafting, making them particularly suitable for the manufacture of cast and molded acrylic sheets, as well as adhesives, acrylic fibers, superabsorbent polymers, detergents, and flocculants. Perkadox® AIBN can also be used in pharmaceuticals and fine organic synthesis. Our Trigonox 421 offers similar technical performance and serves as a sustainable alternative to AIBN. Another advantage of Trigonox 421 is that all decomposition products it generates are non-toxic, in contrast to AIBN, which forms toxic TMSN.
Applications
Perkadox® AIBN-PD can be successfully used in bulk, solution, and suspension polymerization of various monomers, such as styrene, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, acrylonitrile, acrylates, and methacrylates. Perkadox® AIBN-PD does not form oxidative residues nor does it cause oxidative degradation of pigments in colored polymer systems. For this reason, color stability is improved in colored or transparent polymers, such as polymethyl methacrylate. 2,2'-Azobis(isobutyronitrile) (Perkadox® AIBN-PD) is also the most commonly used (azo) initiator in free-radical reactions, particularly those using hydroxytris(n-butyl)stannane as an initiator.
