- NOROX® 510-80-AL3 is a colorless, free-flowing liquid containing approximately 80% w/w 1,1-tert-butylperoxycyclohexane, which has been de-sensitized with alkane hydrocarbons. This cycloaliphatic peroxide is used as a curing initiator (radical source) for unsaturated polyester resins.
- Main Applications: Hot-press molding of SMC or BMC at temperatures ranging from 130 to 150°C (266 to 302°F).
- Appearance: Colorless liquid
- Deactivator: Alkane hydrocarbons
- Content: approx. 80% w/w
- Active Oxygen (AO) Content: Approx. 8.8% w/w
- Density (20°C): Approximately 0.90 g/cm³
- Viscosity (20°C): Approximately 6.7 mPa·s
- Refractive index (20°C): approx. 1.441
- Critical Temperature (SADT): approx. 60°C / 140°F
- Refrigerated stability: approx. -20°C / -4°F
- Initiation temperature: approx. 80°C / 176°F
- Recommended storage temperature: Below 30°C / 86°F
- Shelf life after delivery: 6 months
- Standard Packaging: HDPE drums, 35 lbs and 25 kg
- Curing agent for unsaturated polyester resins, with a temperature range of 120–160°C (248–320°F).
- Usage ratio: 0.5–2.5%.
- "Shelf life" (gel time of resin + peroxide) at room temperature varies from several weeks to several months depending on the resin type and is virtually unaffected by fillers, pigments, cobalt salts, or tertiary aromatic amines.
- Adding 0.1–0.3% of the inhibitor BC 500 can significantly extend the shelf life.
- Within the range of 75–90°C (167–194°F) (“initiation” temperature), the curing rate will not be very high if the reaction heat does not cause a temperature rise (e.g., inside a heated mold).
- True short-time curing within 1–3 minutes is only achievable at temperatures above 115°C (239°F).
- The optimal temperature range for hot-press molding is 125–150°C (257–302°F).
- NOROX® 510-80-AL3 provides improved surface properties for SMC parts.
- Primarily used for hot-press molding of sheet molding compounds (SMC) or bulk molding compounds (BMC).
- NOROX® 510-80-AL3 reacts slightly faster than NOROX® 500-80-AL3 in standard n-butylphenol polyester molding resins.
- Decomposition products that may be detected: tert-butyl alcohol, acetone, cyclohexanone, lactone, hexanoic acid
- Avoid heat, light, and moisture, and protect the product from contamination by impurities.
- Keep within safe temperature limits.
