Organic peroxides (UN 3101–3120) are classified as Class 5.2 Dangerous Goods. Characterized by their labile peroxy linkage (-O-O-), they are thermally unstable and undergo self-accelerating, highly exothermic decomposition when subjected to elevated temperatures or contamination. The Self-Accelerating Decomposition Temperature (SADT) is the critical statutory benchmark established by the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods for determining safe storage and transport temperatures.
Basic Information
- Scientific Definition of SADT: The lowest ambient temperature at which self-accelerating decomposition occurs in a substance in its commercial packaging.
- UN Hazard Classification (Types A through G):
- Type A: Extremely dangerous, prohibited for transport in commercial packaging.
- Type B to D: Requires temperature control and emergency pressure relief vessels.
- Type E to F: Mainstream commercial chemical formulations governed by SADT limits.
SADT, Control Temperature (Tc), and Emergency Temperature (Tem)
In accordance with the IMDG Code and UN transport regulations:
| Packaging SADT | Control Temp (Tc) | Emergency Temp (Tem) | Representative Peroxides |
|---|---|---|---|
| SADT ≤ 20°C | SADT - 20°C | SADT - 10°C | IPP / Trigonox EHP (stored at -20°C deep freeze) |
| 20°C < SADT ≤ 35°C | SADT - 15°C | SADT - 10°C | Trigonox 141, Perkadox 16 |
| 35°C < SADT ≤ 50°C | SADT - 10°C | SADT - 5°C | LPO, Trigonox 21S (stored at 10–20°C) |
| SADT > 50°C | No mandatory temperature control | None | DCP, BPDH (Trigonox 101), BIBP, TBPB |
Safety Storage and Warehouse Engineering Protocols
- Segregated Storage: Strictly isolate from strong acids, alkalis, cobalt promoters, amine accelerators, and reducing agents.
- Explosion-Proof Refrigeration: Temperature-controlled organic peroxides must be stored in Class 1 Division 1 (ATEX Zone 1) facilities equipped with dual backup generators and remote telemetry alerts.
- Spill Containment and Pressure Relief: Warehouses must feature non-sparking anti-static floors, lightweight explosion-relief roofs, and dedicated chemical spill basins.
