In polymer synthesis, rubber vulcanization, and thermoset composite curing, the half-life (\(t_{1/2}\)) of organic peroxides is the fundamental kinetic parameter determining process temperature, initiator selection, and feeding strategy. Half-life is defined as the time required for 50% of the peroxide molecules to undergo homolytic cleavage into free radicals at a given constant temperature.
Basic Information
- Kinetic Principle: The decomposition rate constant \(k_d\) obeys the Arrhenius equation: \(k_d = A \cdot e^{-E_a / RT}\)
- Half-Life Equation: \(t_{1/2} = \frac{\ln(2)}{k_d} = \frac{0.693}{k_d}\)
- Standard Industrial Benchmarks: Peroxides are universally classified by the temperatures at which their half-life reaches 0.1 hour (6 minutes), 1 hour, and 10 hours.

Applications
- Low-Temperature Initiation (50–90°C): Diacyl peroxides (LPO, BPO) provide high radical yield at moderate temperatures for PVC suspension polymerization and acrylic resins.
- Medium-Temperature Curing (100–140°C): Peroxyketals and peroxydicarbonates (TMCH, TBEC, TBPEH) are ideal for SMC/BMC compression molding and pultrusion profiles.
- High-Temperature Crosslinking (140–180°C): Dialkyl peroxides (DCP, BPDH, BIBP, DTBP) generate robust C-C crosslinks for EPDM, silicone rubber, and XLPE insulation.
Safety and Storage
Organic peroxides are Class 5.2 hazardous goods. Always adhere to the established Self-Accelerating Decomposition Temperature (SADT) limits, avoid contamination with heavy metal salts or reducing agents, and maintain refrigerated cold-chain storage.
