United Initiators NOROX®MEC-EX Methyl ethyl ketone peroxide 1338-23-4

Norox® MEC-EX is a colorless stabilizer solution of methyl ethyl ketone peroxide and cyclohexanone peroxide.Norox® MEC-EX is designed to provide excellent curing properties when used as an initiator with unsaturated polyester resins at both low and ambient temperatures.

Technical data:

  • Active oxygen content: 9.0% maximum
  • Form: Liquid
  • Color: Colorless
  • Specific gravity per liter @ 25°C: 1.12
  • Viscosity @ 25°C: 18.0 centipoise (cps)
  • Flash point (SETA C.C.): 170°F/77°C minimum
  • SADT (Self-Accelerating Decomposition Temperature): >140°F/60°C
  • Solubility: oxidizing organic solvents
  • Slightly soluble in: water
  • Storage temperature: <80°F (27°C)

Applications: Norox® MEC-EX is recommended to initiate the cobalt-facilitated gelation and curing process of unsaturated polyester resins at low operating temperatures. It also performs well at room temperature. It offers several advantages over standard MEKP formulations, including reduced gel-to-cure times in many resins, resistance to cold conditions, and excellent smoothness and uniformity during cure.

Storage and processing:

  • Storage at 80°F (27°C) or below is recommended, and optimal shelf life requires storage at temperatures below 70°F (21°C).
  • Avoid storing in flammable materials, heat sources, sparks, flames and direct sunlight.
  • If a container leaks, remove and isolate it immediately to a safe area, repackage or dispose of it properly.
  • Do not store in a refrigerator where food or beverages are stored.

Emergency procedures: In case of eye contact, flush with water immediately and seek medical help. For skin contact, wash with soap and water. In case of accidental ingestion, seek medical help, do not induce vomiting, and consider contacting a poison control center.

Spill and fire response:

  • Immediately clean up the spill with an inactive material such as vermiculite or sand.
  • For very small fires, extinguishers of carbon dioxide, foam or dry chemicals can be used.
  • If a fire occurs near the storage area, use water spray to cool the storage container.

Packaging and supply:

  • Standard package sizes for NOROX® MEC-EX include four 8 lb and 44 lb (20 kg) polyethylene bottles.
  • Refer to the specific NOROX® MEC-EX Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for classification, transportation and regulatory information.
  • NOROX® MEC-EX is available through a global network and you can contact United Initiators, Inc. for distributor information.
