Luperox® 231XL40-SP is a scorch inhibitor based on Luperox® 231XL40, using calcium carbonate and silica as dispersing carriers, with a concentration of 40%.It belongs to the class of ketone peroxides and has the chemical formula 1,1'-bis(tert-butylperoxy)-3,3,5-trimethylcyclohexane, with a CAS number of 6731-36-8 and a molecular weight of 302.4 g/mol.
Main Properties:
- Physical Form: Powder
- Peroxide content: 40%
- Active oxygen content: 4.2%
Scorch Protection: Luperox® 231XL40-SP provides exceptional scorch protection and addresses the issues associated with traditional scorch protection methods. Its advantages include:
- Rapid free radical scavenging, providing excellent scorch protection.
- It maintains a comparable level of crosslinking without reducing crosslinking density.
Performance: Comparison of the vulcanization performance of Luperox® 231XL40 and Luperox® 231XL40-SP in EPDM compounds:
- Comparable vulcanization time (t90) and maximum torque (MH).
- At 110°C, the scorch protection time (ts05) of Luperox® 231XL40-SP is five times that of Luperox® 231XL40.
Advantages: Good scorch protection improves processing efficiency, including:
- Improved mixing efficiency, which can be achieved by increasing the mixing speed, resulting in a more uniform compound.
- Reduced antioxidant usage; in rubber formulations, SP additives can also serve as antioxidants.
- During production, scorch protection reduces downtime for equipment cleaning and increases production time.
Vulcanization Accelerator: Luperox® 231XL40-SP can be used as a vulcanization accelerator. When used in combination with Luperox® F40-SP, it achieves a faster vulcanization rate than Luperox® F40 alone, while maintaining the same crosslink density and providing good scorch protection.
Main Applications: Luperox® 231XL40-SP is primarily used as a vulcanizing agent in the following products:
- Hoses and window frames
- Rubber O-rings and gaskets
- Technical products
- Wires and cables
- Golf ball cores
- EPDM and EVA Shoe Soles
Addition Levels: Typical addition levels are listed in the table below:
- EPM: 6–15 phr
- EPDM: 6–15 phr
- EVA: 3–6 phr
Decomposition Products: In an inert atmosphere, the primary decomposition products of Luperox® 231XL40-SP include acetone, tert-butanol, methane, carbon dioxide, trimethylcyclohexane, and 3,3,5-trimethylcyclohexanone.For detailed information on safety, handling, storage, and transportation, please refer to the MSDS.
