High-performance resin system for enhancing heat resistance and mechanical strength

Main Applications
The innovative Daron® resin system is based on two components: Daron® 45 and isocyanate. For example, Lupranat® M20R is a polyformaldehyde-p-xylene isocyanate resin.In this product data sheet, the two-component system is referred to as Daron® 45 plus isocyanate. The use of the fiber-reinforced Daron® 45 resin system yields composite parts with outstanding chemical and thermal properties as well as good mechanical properties.Furthermore, these components exhibit outstanding long-term heat resistance and good resistance to prolonged mechanical loads.
The optimized ratio of Daron® 45 to 38 parts of isocyanate provides an excellent pot life. The thickening reaction time after mixing the two components is extended to 2.5 hours.During this extended period, reactivity can be easily adjusted by varying the amounts of peroxide and accelerator and/or by adjusting the curing temperature. This long pot life allows the resin to be used in most open- and closed-mold processing techniques, such as hand lay-up, filament winding, and pultrusion.

Application Guidelines
Mixing Daron® 45 with 38 parts of isocyanate provides a resin system suitable for both open-mold and closed-mold processing. Standard reinforcing materials for unsaturated polyester resins can be used.
The processing characteristics of Daron® 45/B38 are similar to those of standard unsaturated polyester resins, with good impregnation and wetting of reinforcing materials.
The following are some typical starting formulations:
Pull-trusion: The processing speed of Daron® 45 mixed with 38 parts of isocyanate is significantly higher than that of traditional unsaturated polyester and vinyl ester resins. The formulations listed in the table below have a pot life of approximately 1 hour. Cooling the resin tank may extend the pot life by a factor of 2.A two-component injection system can significantly extend the pot life to at least 8 hours.
First, prepare a premix of Daron® 45, peroxide, and a moisture absorber. This premix is typically stable for about 8 hours.A desiccant is necessary to absorb moisture from the system before it reacts with the isocyanate component (e.g., Lupranat® M20R).
Next, add 38 parts of isocyanate and 2 parts of diethylaniline-10% accelerator to 100 parts of the premix. Once mixed, this will provide a pot life of approximately 40 minutes at 20°C.
