AOC Daron® 45 2-component High Performance Resin System, Component A

High-performance resin systems for improved heat resistance and mechanical strength
Daron® 45 is the A component of an innovative two-component high-performance resin system. The resulting composite parts have excellent mechanical properties and heat resistance, which was only possible with high-performance thermosetting resins until now.

dominance

  • Excellent mechanical properties through good fiber infiltration
  • Compatible with a wide range of fiber types, including carbon fiber, glass fiber and basalt
  • Excellent resistance to high temperatures and long-lasting durability
  • Proven track record of performance at the high end

Composite Applications

major application

Innovative Daron® resin systems are based on two components, Daron® 45 and isocyanates. For example, Lupranat® M20R is a polyformaldehyde phenyl isocyanate resin. In this product data sheet, the two-component system is referred to as Daron® 45 plus isocyanate. The use of Daron® 45 resin systems with fiber reinforcement results in composite parts with excellent chemical and thermal properties and good mechanical properties. In addition, these parts exhibit outstanding long-term heat resistance and good resistance to long-term mechanical loads.
Daron® 45 has an optimized ratio of 38 parts isocyanate with excellent latency. The thickening reaction time that occurs after mixing the two components is extended to 2.5 hours. During this long period of time, the reactivity can be easily adjusted by adjusting the amount of peroxide and accelerator, and/or by adjusting the curing temperature. This long latency period allows the resin to be used in most open and closed mold processing techniques such as hand lay-up, fiber wrap and pultrusion molding.

Application Guide

Daron® 45 blended with 38 parts isocyanate provides a resin system suitable for open and closed mold processing. Standard reinforcements of unsaturated polyester resins can be used.
The processing properties of Daron® 45/B38 are similar to those of standard unsaturated polyester resins, with good impregnation properties and good wettability of the reinforcing material.

Here are some typical starting recipes:

Pultrusion Molding: Daron® 45 plus 38 parts isocyanate has a much faster processing speed than conventional unsaturated polyester and vinyl ester resins. The formulations described in the table below have an approximate expiration date of 1 hour. Cooling of the resin bath may extend the expiration date by a factor of two. Two-component injection systems can significantly extend the expiration date to a minimum of 8 hours.
First, a premix of Daron® 45, peroxide and moisture absorber is prepared. This premix is usually stabilized for about 8 hours. The hygroscopic agent is necessary to absorb the water in the system before it reacts with the isocyanate component (e.g. Lupranat® M20R).
Next, 38 parts of isocyanate and 2 parts of diethylaniline-10% accelerator were added to 100 parts of the premix. After mixing, this will provide an expiration date of about 40 minutes at 20°C.
