Curing of unsaturated polyester resins at ambient temperature cannot usually be carried out by organic peroxides alone. The formation of free radicals necessary to initiate the polymerization reaction takes place at ambient temperature and the most commonly used organic peroxides are too slow. Therefore, in order to accelerate free radical formation in a controlled manner, organic peroxides have to be used in combination with so-called accelerators. For ketone peroxides such as methyl ethyl ketone peroxides, cyclohexanone peroxides and acetyl acetone peroxides, cobalt promoters must be used.
