Gelation characteristics may vary with different types of initiators and under conditions of extremely high humidity. Pigments and/or fillers may delay or accelerate gelation.Manufacturers are advised to verify the gelation characteristics of a small amount of resin under actual operating conditions prior to use.

Product Description

The AOC Vipel® K022 series consists of styrene-soluble brominated bisphenol A epoxy vinyl ester resins. The Vipel® K022 series is ideal for hand lay-up, spray-up, filament winding, and pultrusion processes that require excellent mechanical properties, chemical resistance, and heat resistance.
The Vipel® K022-CN series contains antimony.

Main Applications

The Vipel® K022 series is a flame-retardant resin suitable for products subjected to particularly high static or dynamic loads, such as chimneys and
linings, fire-resistant equipment, building panels, and flooring materials.

Performance Characteristics

Flame Retardant

Certain versions of Vipel® K022 meet the ASTM E 84 Class I flame spread requirements without the need for antimony trioxide.

Mechanical Properties

Vipel® K022 is suitable for products subjected to particularly high static or dynamic loads. Vinyl ester resins offer excellent sustained heat resistance.

Versatility

Extensive formulation capabilities make it suitable for many processes and enable optimization of both cost and performance.

Corrosion Resistance

Vipel® K022 exhibits strong corrosion resistance in a wide range of chemical environments. For information on corrosion resistance or questions regarding the resin’s suitability for any specific chemical environment, please refer to AOC’s “Resin Corrosion Resistance Guide” or contact AOC.

Laminate structure: 2 layers of 2.0 ounces per square foot (600 g/m²) chopped strand mat, 30% glass fiber content; the laminate is post-cured for 3 hours at 100°C.

Processing Guidelines

  • Maintain the hardener dosage between 1.0% and 2.5% of the total resin weight to achieve adequate cured strength;
  • The workshop temperature should be maintained between 18°C and 32°C, and the humidity should be maintained between 40% and 90%. Consistent workshop conditions ensure consistent gel times and help manufacturers produce high-quality products.
  • Finished products cured at room temperature in contact with air should have a surface that is relatively non-tacky to the touch. However, they may not be fully cured and therefore may not exhibit the same chemical resistance as fully cured products. If no further lamination is planned, a 10% solution of styrene containing 5% paraffin (melting point:
  • 46–48°C) to the final layer of resin to achieve a non-tacky surface.
  • Vipel® K022 series composite products that have already cured at room temperature can be post-cured at 70–100°C for two hours to achieve optimal curing and performance.
  • For room-temperature curing promoted by a cobalt salt solution, use an MEKP initiator with a high dipolymer content to minimize bubble formation.
